Only a gardener can understand this good feeling of filling recently cleaned pots with fresh seed compost. It may seem a bit backward to clean a plastic pot with hot, soapy water only to then proceed to fill it with dirt, but it’s satisfying. Satisfying to know that any bugs or nasties that were lingering in the remnants of the old soil, in the shed over winter, have been washed away. Satisfying to know I am starting afresh, regardless of what happened in those pots last year, I am growing something new. In this case, I’m sowing sunflowers; for a bit of colour where there is currently little at all, for their big, bright flower heads, and for their tasty seeds in the autumn!
